Privacy Policy

1. Overview

Mealie Recipe Importer ("the Extension") is a Chrome browser extension that helps you import recipes from websites directly into your self-hosted Mealie instance using the Mealie REST API. We are committed to protecting your privacy. This policy explains what data the Extension accesses, how it is used, and how it is stored.

2. Data We Do Not Collect

Mealie Recipe Importer does not:

  • Collect, store, or transmit any personal information to our servers.
  • Use analytics, telemetry, or crash-reporting services.
  • Track your browsing history or the pages you visit.
  • Share any data with third parties.
  • Display advertisements or build advertising profiles.

We operate no backend server. There is no database of user records associated with this Extension.

3. Data Stored Locally on Your Device

The Extension stores the following information exclusively in Chrome's built-in chrome.storage.sync or chrome.storage.local APIs on your own device:

  • Mealie server URL – the base URL of your self-hosted Mealie instance (e.g., https://mealie.yourdomain.com).
  • API token – a Mealie API key you generate yourself within your Mealie account settings. This token is stored securely in Chrome's encrypted storage and is never sent anywhere other than your own Mealie server.

If you use chrome.storage.sync, Chrome may synchronise these values across your signed-in Chrome browsers via your Google account. This synchronisation is handled entirely by Google/Chrome and is subject to Google's Privacy Policy. You can disable sync at any time in Chrome settings.

4. Network Communication

The Extension communicates only with:

  • The recipe website you are currently viewing — solely to extract structured recipe data from the page you have already loaded in your browser.
  • Your own Mealie server at the URL you configure — to submit the extracted recipe via the Mealie API using your own API token.

No data is sent to mealierecipeimporter.com or any other external server.

5. Permissions

The Extension requests the following Chrome permissions and uses them solely as described:

  • activeTab – to read the content of the current tab when you click the Extension button, in order to extract recipe data.
  • storage – to save your Mealie server URL and API token locally.
  • host permissions (your Mealie server URL) – to make API requests to your self-hosted instance.

6. API Token Security

Your Mealie API token is stored using Chrome's encrypted storage APIs and is transmitted only over HTTPS connections to your own server. We strongly recommend:

  • Configuring your Mealie instance with a valid TLS/SSL certificate.
  • Using a dedicated, limited-scope API token rather than an admin token where possible.
  • Revoking and rotating your token periodically from within your Mealie account settings.

7. Children's Privacy

The Extension is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect any information from children.

8. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be reflected on this page with an updated effective date. Continued use of the Extension after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
